“A good author talk can send you home looking at your own community differently,” said Jeff Barraclough, president of the New Hampshire Heritage Museum Trail. “You may start wondering about a building you pass every day or a local story you have never thought to question.”
Author Howard Mansfield at New Hampshire Historical Society
At the New Hampshire Historical Society, Howard Mansfield will discuss his book, Invisible Monuments: Tribute, Memory, and the Summoning of the Past, on Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. The program invites visitors to consider how we remember and honor the past, a question that resonates across the museums and historic sites on The Trail.
Books will be available for purchase and signing. Admission is free for members and $10 for nonmembers, with no registration required.
The following weekend, the Manchester Historic Association will bring nine authors and historians together at the Millyard Museum for a Manchester Author Panel Talk on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to noon. Included with regular museum admission, the discussion will explore their books, research, and approaches to writing about the city’s history.
Together, the programs reflect the role Trail museums play as places to exchange ideas as well as explore exhibits. “Many of our programs encourage visitors to not just learn about the past, but ask questions,” added Barraclough. “History is something that continues to happen today.”
The New Hampshire Heritage Museum Trail connects the public with culturally rich heritage institutions across the Seacoast, Lakes Region, White Mountains, Dartmouth-Sunapee Region, and Merrimack Valley.
